Desso creates tapestry for Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Dutch carpet manufacturer Desso has developed a 200 square meter tapestry for a monumental wall hanging designed by Inside Outside at the entrance of Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

The 200 square meter tapestry designed for Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam rises to a height of 14 meters. The wall hanging is spread across the rear wall of the museum restaurant on the ground floor.

Desso has sponsored this unique work of art along with Inside Outside by developing a unique weaving technique for the project. The artwork is textile based and complements the architecture of the museum with the A.W. Weissman’s original 1895 building. It connects the building to the new wing designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects.

The tapestry also references to the site’s pre-urban history till 19th century, when the area of the Museumplein was occupied by some farmhouses. Besides enhancing the acoustic quality of the space, the textile artwork also blends craftsmanship and design.
