Designs unveiled for new security checkpoint at Gerald R. Ford International Airport
Conceptual designs for the new single security checkpoint at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Michigan were unveiled by Minneapolis-based Architectural Alliance.
The new security checkpoint will lead into a new concession and retail area, and has been designed to decrease congestion for passengers.
The designs show a build out of the exterior wall of the Grand Hall, which is currently the location of the waiting area and gift shop. The bilevel Grand Hall currently features a cluster of tables and a gift shop, and food and drink offerings. Administrative offices are on the second floor.
The plans call for consolidating the current, two separate Transportation Security Administration passenger screening checkpoints, and moving concessions behind that point. It will feature a full-on restaurant, lounge seating for passengers, and a giant, glass-paneled wall overlooking the airfield.
The airport is also planning to implement a new de-icing system, construction of two new gates in Concourse B and re-construction of the terminal runway ramp or "apron," as reported in grbj. The projects are expected to cost $43.4 million over the next five years.
