Design award winner looks to the future

British designer Tom Foulsham is among the three recipients of this year’s W Hotels Designers of the Future Award.

Presented annually as part of Design Miami and its sister event in Switzerland, Design Miami/Basel, the award honours young designers and studios judged to 'exemplify new directions in design culture'.

Foulsham and fellow winners Markus Kayser from Germany and Philippe Malouin from Canada will now produce original work to be exhibited at this year's Design Miami/ and Design Miami/Basel events, which take place in December and June respectively. The brief for this year's commission is 'from spark to finish'.

Qualifying candidates for the W Hotels Designers of the Future Award must have created original works in the fields of furniture, lighting, craft, architecture and/or digital and electronic media.

Candidates must have been practicing for less than 15 years and have produced a body of work that demonstrates originality in the creative process, while also exhibiting an interest in working in experimental, nonindustrial or limited-edition design.

The winners are chosen by an jury that this year included Tord Boontje of Royal College of Art, Wava Carpenter of Design Miami, Aric Chen of Beijing Design Week and Ilse Crawford of Design Academy Eindhoven.
