Construction underway for new leisure centre project in South London
The construction work is underway for the new Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre project in Elephant and Castle district, UK, which is undertaken by UK- based Balfour Beatty in collaboration with Southwark Council.
Designed to provide a new modern leisure facility on the site of the existing facility, the three-storey Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre is being developed on the site of the existing facility.
Upon completion, the facility will include a 25 metre community swimming pool, a separate 12 metre learner pool incorporating a moveable floor and sauna and steam room facilities.
Apart from that the leisure centre will also feature a new four-court sports hall together with a 140 station gym, two studios, spinning room and wet and dry changing facilities.
The main build will feature a steel frame, concrete cores and basement. Externally the cladding will comprise of a lightweight metal brass standing seam system and natural timber.
Apart from that the new centre will also feature a crèche, café and associated office space to manage the centre.
Designed to achieve a BREEAM 'very good' rating, the design of the centre features various sustainable features like the inclusion of a combined heat and boiler plant, photovoltaic panels and grey water recycling system.
The Elephant and Castle development is a continuation of the partnership between Southwark Council and its Local Education Partnership, 4:Futures which comprised of Southwark Council, Balfour Beatty and Amber Structures.
Works commenced on site in the later part of April 2013 with completion programmed for December 2014.
