Clark Memorial Library to begin major overhaul soon

The Clark Memorial Library on the University of Portland campus in Oregon, US is set to begin a $12 million facelift in May 2012.

The project has been designed by Soderstrom Architects and will be developed by Todd Construction. The main floor of the 56,000 square feet building will be equipped with new movable seating facilities and computers following the makeover. Other features of the renovated main level include integrated computer stations, a coffee cart, six study rooms, as well as a pair of open seating spaces.

The library's lower storey will now incorporate six study rooms, two open seating areas, a help desk, an express check-out zone, and a fireplace. The upper floor of the building will comprise computer bar seating, 14 study rooms, an Information Literacy Classroom, a meeting room, a production studio, and a sound room post upgrades.

All the books of the library will now be shelved in compact shelving. Work will also involve rewiring of the entire building, installation of an energy-saving chilled-beam system, and incorporation of upgraded internet service. In addition, there will be construction of a new external stair tower and terrace outside the main floor of the facility.

The project is being financed through donations from various local nonprofit groups and private donors.
