City of Simi Valley opens green maintenance facility and garage


The City of Simi Valley has opened its first $2.4 million LEED-Certified Simi Valley Transit’s Maintenance Facility and Garage in California, US after a revamp.


The facility has already bagged LEED Gold certification from the US Green Council by employing a host of green measures. It has been equipped with various high-performance systems which reap energy cost cuts of 25% and about 42% in water savings. The facility has made use of reclaimed, renewable and regional materials in its design, envelope as well as for its interior finishes. Further, it has diverted 97% of its construction debris from reaching landfills.

The project has also refurbished the garage and fitted it with safety upgrades to maintain the City’s compressed natural gas (CNG) bus fleet. The facility has incorporates a contemporary bus wash which filters and reuses wash water, thereby creating water savings and pacing up the wash process. The CNG fuel dispensing area has also undergone an overhaul.

The project has been financed through Federal Transit Administration and American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds.
