Chrysler Museum of Art receives approval for major renovation, expansion

The Chrysler Museum of Art Board of Trustees has approved plans for an expansion and refurbishment of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Virginia, US, with an estimated budget of $24 million.

The two-storey, 210,000 square feet museum will receive new gallery space spanning 8000 square feet in two new wings. The new wings will flank its entryway. All the galleries of the facility, including the Ancient Worlds galleries, and the Glass collection gallery, will undergo upgrades as part of the project.

Work will further involve relocation, expansion, and makeover of the café and catering facilities of the property. The exterior entrance will open to Mary’s Garden and will incorporate additional outside dining facilities. The project will also enhance visitor circulation and access, and install upgraded heating and air conditioning systems.

Construction is due to commence by July 2012 and be completed by early 2014.
