Chabot College earns LEED for student centre
Chabot Community College in Hayward, California, US has secured LEED Platinum for its Community and Student Services Centre (CSSC).
Designed by US-based architectural practice tBP/Architecture, the CSSC is the centrepiece of the college, whose green features set it aside from its peers.
The new student centre features a glazing created using SageGlass, an electronically tintable glass from SAGE Electrochromics. SageGlass can be used as an element of integrated daylighting control system which helps manage sunlight and heat gain. It provides easy and quick tinting and clearing, which enables reduction in cooling, heating and lighting cost.
The glazing adjusts to the flow of air by means of the natural ventilation scoops on the roof and thermal heating/cooling of the radiant slab in the atrium, which assists in maintaining the internal atmosphere. Another benefit of SageGlass is that it keeps the outside view unobstructed.
In addition, the building's atrium features a two-storey 2,900 square feet south and west facing curtain wall. It offers protection from sun's heat and glare.
