Centers for Disease Control wins LEED Gold for Georgia facility

Centers for Disease Control has secured LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council for its new 'Building 24' in Atlanta, Georgia.

Designed by tvsdesign and built by Turner Construction Company, the new building of the Centers for Disease Control is a 12-storey, 311,000 square foot office building. The facility serves as the global headquarters for the Centers for Disease Control’s Infectious Disease department and is located at the Center’s Roybal campus.

The levels above the ground floor are office space, while the ground floor accommodates a divisible large conference room and a snack bar. The ground floor has a water feature and overlooks the campus' greenspace.

The office spaces of the building have an open plan layout and feature floor-to-ceiling glass, which, in addition to allowing the occupants to enjoy the outside views, also flushes the interior with natural light. The ends of the building feature staircases.

The energy performance of the building exceeds Federal facilities mandates with a 33% reduction in energy usage from the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 baseline. Turner, to further achieve sustainability, has recycled more than 3,000 tons of construction waste over the course of the project. The building also includes a 30,000 gallon storm water cistern for reclaiming storm water and using it for irrigation purposes.
