Calgary South Health Campus first phase opens in Alberta

The $1.3 billion Calgary South Health Campus in Calgary, Canada has opened its first phase to the patients.

The $1.3 billion hospital is the largest in Alberta. When fully operational, the 300-bed facility will include 11 new operating rooms and 268 acute in-patient beds, along with maternity units, a neonatal intensive care unit, intensive care beds and several outpatient clinics, with a focus on wellness. Patients, family members and citizens are also involved in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health services.

The hospital recently opened diagnostic imaging and family clinics as part of the first phase. These are part of the Family Medicine Teaching Centre, which combines family health care with training for doctors participating in their hospital residency program.

Other services at the South Health Campus will be opened in phases over the coming months. The emergency department will open in early 2013.
