Bumper British crop makes its mark with design guild
The Furniture Makers Company has awarded the Design Guild Mark to 27 pieces of furniture this year, including work by Nigel Coates, David Chipperfield and Katerina Zachariades.
Established in 2008, the Design Guild Mark honours 'the finest furniture designers working in volume production in Britain and the best British furniture designers working abroad', according to the Furniture Makers Company.
The 27 products to receive the award this year were chosen by a panel of 12 judges which included interior designer Stephan Oberwegner, design journalist Barbara Chandler and interior designer Pernille Stafford.
The criteria are excellence in four fields: design, use of materials, manufacture and function. Coates's Domo chair, designed for Poltronova, and David Chipperfield's Piana Chair for Alessi, were among the designs judged to meet the criteria this year, as was Katerina Zachariades's Manhattan Collection sofa (pictured above) for Morgan and Pearson Lloyd's PLC Chair Line for Modus.
This is a bumper year for the Design Guild Mark, with the number of products receiving the honour more than double that of last year. A statement by the Furniture Makers Company, also known as the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, said: 'In this fifth year there were a very high number of applications and the design of most of them was exceptional.'
