Brightview South River senior housing community receives LEED Gold


Brightview South River senior housing community in Edgewater, Maryland, US has bagged LEED Gold from the US Green Building Council.


The housing has been designed by Baltimore's Hord Coplan Macht and developed by The Shelter Group, also based in Baltimore. It offers residential units with assisted living services for 64 residents.

The property is the first senior project in the state to win the certification. The facility comprises various eco-friendly systems such as a green roof. It has been fitted with Energy Star-certified windows, doors and appliances. The lighting fixtures, fans, and HVAC units installed in the building run low on energy usage. The walls and roofs of the building provide increased insulation.

The facility has been equipped with low-flow plumbing systems and appliances which cut down water consumption. It also sports multiple ponds to collect stormwater. Use of zero- or low-VOC paints, carpeting and flooring, along with reclaimed and regionally-sourced construction materials add to the building's sustainability.

The facility comprises storage and collection spaces for recycling. Further, it purchases 35% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Among other green features include incorporation of native landscaping, an electric car-charging station, bike racks, and preferred parking areas for fuel efficient vehicles and carpools.
