Black Watch museum in Perth to undergo major renovation

Black Watch museum in Perth, Scotland will undergo a £3 million ($4.76 million) renovation to provide a permanent home for the museum and archive of the Black Watch.

The renovation of the Black Watch museum in Perth, which is the historic centre of the regimental recruiting area, will involve the redevelopment of the existing museum building and galleries to provide more space for special exhibitions, meetings, small functions and educational lectures and presentations.

Retaining the existing style of the museum that includes a large number of objects, prints and paintings on display, the design of the galleries and displays of the museum will reflect the character of the topic. Accessible, both physically and intellectually, the displays will be designed to allow full access for wheelchair users and good practice guidelines for the height of displays will be followed. The design of panels, images, text etc will also follow good practice access guidelines.

Designed to meet modern standards of accessibility for disabled people, the new museum will include an improved entrance, increased display space, a large area for special exhibitions, educational interpretation and reunions, and improved storage for archives and artefacts.

To enhance the visitor experience, the proposed renovated museum will include improved shop and reception area, accessible visitor facilities, including a tea room and toilets for visitors, improved parking and a designated learning space.

The layout and design of the proposed redeveloped museum has been developed by the existing museum staff with project curator Allan Carswell and exhibition design consultant Studio MB.

The work will take seven months to complete with the museum expected to re-open its doors by April 2013.
