BDP wins Düsseldorf Ulmer Höh design competition

International architectural practice BDP has won the Düsseldorf Ulmer Höh design competition to create an urban mixed-use scheme in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The project involves redevelopment of a former prison site into a thriving mixed-use scheme. The 15-hectare site is located within a city block and features mature trees and historical buildings, which are expected to be incorporated in the design to create a lively city neighbourhood.

BDP’s winning proposal includes retaining the existing city block structures as the perimeter for the development, which will serve as the link between the new development and the city. The firm also plans to replace the prison complex located within the perimeter blocks into a green oasis, which is expected to benefit all the new homes.

The company’s proposal includes demolition of the entire prison complex, with an exception of the chapel building, which will be retained and converted into a community centre that will serve as a meeting place for the new residential quarters.
