BDP to provide engineering design for UEA's new low carbon building

BDP will offer full engineering design for the new Norwich Research Park Enterprise Centre for the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK.

The low carbon facility will be developed by Morgan Sindall. The project, executed in association with Architype, will be built to attain a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, a 100 year design life, and will comply by Passivhaus standards. It is also on track to be a carbon sink. This can be achieved through maximum use of locally-sourced materials.

The timber used in the building will be procured from the Thetford Forest, whereas the straw for its prefabricated thatch panels will be sourced from Norfolk. A host of other building materials including rammed chalk, heather and flint will be fabricated and procured via local sources. The facility will also be equipped with PV integrated roofs and will incorporate a solar thermal installation to cut down operational carbon emissions.

The project will be financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund, UEA, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and BRE.
