Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport in Louisiana is designing a new $11 million landing system, known as Category II, to improve safety and attract cargo carriers.

With the existing system, known as Category I, pilots have to decide whether to abort a landing when the plane descends to about 200 feet. The new system, when installed, will allow planes to descend to about 100 feet before making a decision. It will be used only on one of the airport's three runways.

The new landing system is being designed for foggy, rainy weather. The airport officials also added that the Category II system will add to the safety of crew and cargo.

The airport generated $11 million to design and install the new system from its revenue, while about $5 million came from the Federal Aviation Administration that are used for equipment to measure visibility and distance. In addition, another $6 million will be secured from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to get the system designed and built.

The system is expected to be up in about a year and a half.
