Atkins designs landscape masterplan for new waterfront in China

UK-based design and project management consultancy Atkins has designed the landscape masterplan for the development of 30 kilometres of prime waterfront in Nanjing, China ahead of 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

The landscape masterplan will provide connectivity and access along its length addressing industrial sites and urban dereliction as well as link with recent new developments and existing open space.

Emphasising on the geographic specifications and historical importance of the city of Nanjing on the banks of the River Yangtze, the masterplan has consolidated and celebrated all the aspects within the overall riverside corridor.

Covering an area of 11 square kilometres, the design incorporates seven landscape and activity zones which interconnect yet remain distinctive. Designed with natural landscape highlights, the zones feature tourism, leisure, and commercial facilities.

The improvements will provide better access to the key features, especially for the visitors to the Games. It will also provide a lasting legacy celebrating the heritage of Nanjing along its waterfront.
