Architects' team showcase visions for Greenland's future at Venice Biennale 2012

A team of architects from Denmark and Greenland has exhibited a visionary project dubbed Possible Greenland, which shows its visions for the future of Greenland at the Danish Pavilion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2012.

Developed by joint efforts of six teams of architects, engineers, planners and ethnologists from Denmark and Greenland, Possible Greenland tries to reproduce the visions for Greenland. It will include a new combined super harbor and international airport located outside Nuuk; and a sustainable new arctic building that will reflect Greenlandic values, traditions and opportunities. The design tries to create a Greenlandic city, which will be tourist- friendly and rehabilitate migrating mineworkers.

The exhibition is being curated by Danish-Greenlandic geology professor Minik Rosing, in association with NORD Architects Copenhagen. The exhibition tries to create the experience of Greenland through models, images, visualisations, text, film and artifacts.

Revolving around the central theme of the exhibit, the project will also explore the main challenges and opportunities of Greenland. The exhibit will feature a Greenlandic home, created by the Greenlandic artist Bolatta Silis-Høegh. It will also showcase rugged and spectacular Greenlandic nature and an approximately 3.8 billion-years-old stone.

The design team working on the Biennale 2012 include tnt Nuuk, ELKIÆR + EBBESKOV Architects, Hausenberg. Through the Possible Greenland exhibit, the curators plan to put forth the country in front of architects, urban planners, investors, politicians and others as a great political, cultural and business centre in a globalised context. The visitors can see the exhibit in Venice between 29 August to 25 November 2012.

The International Architecture Exhibition in Venice is considered as the world’s most important and most prestigious exhibition concerning architecture, urban planning and construction. The year 2012 will feature 55 national pavilions with exhibitions staged in the historic pavilions and streets of Venice. The British architect David Chipperfield is head curator for the main exhibition.
