Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool achieves financial close

The new £167 million ($252.85 million) Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, designed by the international architectural practice BDP, has achieved financial close.

To be constructed on behalf of Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, the new building will consist of 51,000 square metre of floor area. It will feature 270 beds and 16 state-of-the-art operating theatres.

To provide more privacy and improve the dignity of patients and their families, 75% of bedrooms will be single occupancy with en suite bathrooms. Integrating with the Springfield Park, the hospital will be designed to provide natural views to most of the bedrooms and easy access to the park. Wards will have access to play decks so that children who cannot leave the ward can benefit from outdoor space.

Three open fingers radiate out from the atrium concourse, the distinctive entrance space, that forms the hospital’s public hub. These fingers of clinical space alternate with gardens, intertwining building and landscape.

Designed in consultation with patients and their families, the Prince's Foundation and National Arts for Health, the hospital is said to become the UK's first children’s hospital in a park that will give patients, their families and the Trust's staff the most beneficial environment possible.

Laing O’Rourke Construction will design and build the new hospital and Interserve will maintain the hospital infrastructure. The official opening of the new hospital is planned for Autumn 2015.
