The World’s 11 Best Department Stores 2017
#7 LIBERTY OF LONDON
REGENT STREET, LONDON, UK

A famous haunt of Oscar Wilde’s, Liberty of London is located on Regent Street. It was founded in 1875, however, the building we see today is not the one that opened its doors back then. In 1924 the government ordered all of the buildings on the street to be torn down and rebuilt. That’s when Liberty had a makeover and became the grade II listed building that has helped it make its name. It is a shining example of successful tutor revival.
The store was designed by Edwin T and Edwin S. Hall, and was built using timber from two ships called the HMS Impregnable and the HMS Hindustan. The front façade of the store is exactly the same length as HMS Hindustan.
Inside, three central light wells are surrounded by small cosy rooms. Walking around the store is like wandering around someone’s very expensive home. In some rooms, you will even find working traditional fireplaces.
The store sells only the finest goods and has an out-standing haberdashery on the third floor which sells fabrics from the Liberty Art Fabrics Collection and introduces new designs and prints each season.
