Receiving the inaugural Blueprint Award for Best Public Use Project with Public Funding, the Wolfgang Buttress British Pavilion was the UK's striking addition to the 2015 Milan Expo.
The Nottingham-based practice Wolfgang Buttress forged a design much like a beehive in honour of the honeybee. In doing so, the practice highlight the importance of these small insects that contribute to a third of our national food supply through pollination. The notion encapsulates the Expo's 2015 theme of 'Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life'.

Wildflowers lead up to the hive that visitors can walk through before entering the giant lattice sphere. Comprised of 32 layers and 115,000 aluminium components, the hive is further illuminated by 1,000 LEDs that mirror the buzz and vibrations of live beehives that was researched by Dr Martin Bencsik at Nottingham Trent University.
